“Alexandria” cross-country race 2017
On September 22th, for the sixth consecutive year, the “Alexandria” cross-country race was held at the Centre de la Nature in Laval. More than 1,100 HCGM “Socrates-Démosthène” school students, from all campuses, participated in the annual race, dedicated to Alexander the Great.
The “Alexandria” race was first organised by the Demosthenes School of the former Greek Orthodox Community of Laval and Kostas Diamantis, physical education teacher, as part of the Pan-Hellenic movement for the “name” of Macedonia.
The event was divided in three different segments: A 500-metre race for grades 1 and 2; a 1000-metre race for the 3rd and 4th grades; and finally a 2000-metre run for grades 5, 6 and High-school I and II.
Our students were well prepared for the race, and put in all their efforts with a spirit of emulation, according to our Greek teachings and values. At the end of the day, a medal ceremony was held to recognise the winners of the races, while participation certificates with their achievement time records, were awarded to all students.
The event was organised by the physical education teachers of all “Socrates-Démosthène” campuses, namely Nellie Vlahandreas, Carla Fawaz, Marie Maglieri and Éric Bouchard. We congratulate all of them for their efforts in organising this wonderful event.
We would also like to thank all Campus’s directors, Georgia Tsakalis (Soc II), Chris Filandrianos (Soc III), Diane Trudel (soc IV), Ghislaine Langlois (Soc V) and Chris Katiforis (Démosthène), for the perfect coordination.
Gianni Bodo, a teacher from the Roxboro Campus III, made the excellent presentation and coordination throughout the day.
The Reverend Father Zisis Derekas blessed the event and urged the children to run with love to their fellow athletes and faith in the Lord.
Special thanks to the Laval Regional Council and its President Dionisis Marinos for the support and co-organisation of the event, as well as to all the parents for the voluntary work.
