A Message from the President – September 2016
September has arrived, reminding us that summer vacation is over. As our life in Montreal quickly goes back to its normal rhythms, and we re-acquaint ourselves with our daily routine, our students are excitedly returning to their school desks. We welcome our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grade-one students to their new adventure of knowledge and wish all “Socrates-Démosthène” students a wonderful school year!
Our dream for a High School is finally a reality! On August 26, École “Socrates-Démosthène” entered a new dimension; one that further increases our responsibility, especially towards our pioneer High School students. I wish to reiterate my thanks to the many individuals who worked to realise this project. I believe the secret to our success is the unity with which we achieved it.
With the opening of our High School, we take the opportunity to present you a brief historical overview of Hellenic education in Montreal. A notable work by Fotis Komborozos, Director of the Greek Library of Montreal, who works at maintaining the HCGM archives.
This month, our beloved Holy Cross church in Laval celebrates its 25th Anniversary. A series of events will be held to commemorate this milestone anniversary and I invite you to participate in these celebrations.
The HCGM Social Services Department is once again offering computer classes for seniors, to assist them in this digital era. Eleni Fakotakis, HSSQ Director, presents the necessity of these courses in helping seniors keep up with the modern world.
Finally, I am humbled and deeply honoured by the distinction of “Archon” bestowed upon me by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This honour is a reflection of our entire Community and I humbly accept it in the name of each one of you.
God bless you all,
Nicholas T. Pagonis
President
